Found traces of wine of 6000 years ago in a cave on Mount San Calogero or mount Kronio in Agrigento's province, territory of Sciacca.
La discovery could rewrite the history and culture of ancient Sicily, which would become the first wine producer.
Until today it was thought that the wine came from the South of Anatolia and from  Transcaucasus region.
Our ancestors traded the precious drink considered magical and used probably for purifying rites because capable of altering the human mind, as put down Homer.
The exchange took place with the ancient Greeks in the Peloponnese in exchange of metals of which Sicily was poor.
The caves were inhabited already in the Copper Age, to testify witness to him over 40 large vases, jars and jugs with prehistoric wine.

On Mount San Calogero are:

  • the sanctuary of San Calogero (1530),
  • the Antiquarium, a spa and a series of karst caves, already known to our ancestors and used for therapeutic purposes for the sulphurous fumes, the most known of which is the so-called Stove San Calogero.

Already Diodorus Siculus tells a tale of Daedalus in Sicily of the caves of Hercules and the exceptional phenomenon vaporoso.

Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini (1801-1835)

Sicilian composer.
As a child did not show an inclination for music, she was in her blood. He had been sent by the old Don Vincenzo Tobia Bellini, his grandfather (native of Abruzzo, in Catania in the second half of the eighteenth century and became Kapellmeister of the Prince of Biscari) and then by his father, Rosario, (in his native Catania performed functions of master of chapel and music teacher, organist and composer) he appreciated musician, but always broke and struggling with life every day, so greedy.
Marrying Agata Ferlito, January 17, 1801, the young Rosario had put the house in an apartment on the first floor of the Gravina-Cruyllas palace opposite the church of San Francesco and with three balconies on the Via del Corso. But after the birth of Vincenzo (the night between 2 and 3 November 1801) and other children (Carmel, Francis, Michela, Giuseppa, Mario and Maria), the family, now numerous, was forced to move out to move into a home even more modest, in via S. Agostino, two steps from the house of Don Vincenzo Tobia, who for some time was giving lessons to the promising grandson, pulling him close behind even when played in aristocratic salons and churches, so in short time that kid, pretty and cute was known throughout Catania.

In 1819, Vincenzo obtained from Decurionate Catania a grant (scholarship) of 36 ounces per year and for the space of four years - 459 pounds - for further education in Naples, where he now dwells enrolling at the Royal College of S.Sebastiano music and having a masters G. Furno, Giacomo Tritto and Nicola Antonio Zingarelli. It was the latter, in particular, to direct it towards the melodrama of the Neapolitan school and instrumental works of Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
A prolific composer of sacred music, arias, instrumental and chamber music, Bellini completed the composition course presenting semi-serious opera, Adelson e Salvini (1825); the work was very successful and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples commissioned him immediately another, Bianca and Fernando (the title of which later became White and Gernando) set up in 1826.

With these successes Bellini repaid the trust placed by Decurionate Catania who had assumed the expenses of studies of promising youth, who from an early age had revealed a strong musical talent, so much to write just six years, his first composition (Gallus cantavit). And for the small circles of the nobility Bellini wrote his first arias and probably some instrumental track. In 1819 the jump in Naples with the fees paid by the City. They were years of hard study and even more serious and demanding compositions, which already revealed the cut of the talented musician and mature to take flight towards the best known theaters in the world.

Awards confirmed the following year (1826) when the San Carlo, the present King of Naples Francis I, his second work, Bianca and Gernando, had received unanimous applause, spontaneous, very encouraging even in the twenty-four performances to follow. And in fact, after the two works in Naples, here in Milan (1827); He landed at La Scala, called the impresario Domenico Barbaja, and on October 27 the same year presented a libretto by Felice Romani (who also wrote the verses for him for the next six works), The Pirate. A real triumph, which opened to the musician every street, making him forget so the unhappy Neapolitan flirt with Fumaroli Magdalene went to the mountain to the hostility of the girl's father (who died a few years later). With this work also began the fruitful collaboration of Bellini with the tenor Giambattista Rubini (which take place in baptism nearly all of his works), as will tight ties with Judith Pasta.Le most important works of Bellini born in the short span of time ranging from 1827 to 1835. it is a production certainly not abundant, and this not only for the short life of the composer, but especially for his understanding of the composition.

In contrast to the frantic prolificacy of the other composers of the time, forced by impresarios needs to exhausting tours de force, Bellini said he did not want to write more than one work per year, to pursue research completely. As he wrote in a letter, he was convinced that the success of a work depended "on the choice of an interesting theme, with warm accents of expression, by the contrast of passions". Careful management of his earnings put him in condition to implement this program.
Thus were born, one per year, the works that consecrated the fame of Bellini in Europe and that it is still today the purest exponent of Italian musical romanticism: Foreign (1829), I Capuleti ei Montecchi (1830), La Sonnambula (written in January and February of 1831 his first masterpiece of the Roman text. the opera's success was decreed on the evening of March 6, 1831 on the Carcano scenes of Milan, with Giuditta Pasta and Giambattista Rubini main performers. from Sonnambula in forward hatch to the composer through the streets of Europe's intellectual consensus) and Norma (1831).

The series of successes was only interrupted in 1829 by Zaira fiasco, composed for the inauguration of the renovated Teatro Ducale in Parma. After the interval of a trip to Sicily (1832) made with his friend F.Florimo, Bellini composed his penultimate opera, Beatrice Tenda (1833), which had very little luck, was greeted with little heat at the Teatro La Fenice Venice, marking the final break of Bellini with Turina and the Romans and, indirectly, its official entry into the worldliness' European.
In London and Paris, contested by the lounges, meeting Bellini 'Malibran, Heine, Chopin, Musset, Liszt and lego' friendship with Rossini who was generous with suggestions when composing the new opera, I Puritani and the Knights. In 1834 Bellini agreed to compose a work for the Theatre Italien in Paris, I Puritani, which was staged in 1835 and was his last work.

The Roman Villa of Realmonte is a rustic villa dating back to the first century A.D. located in the beach of Punta Piccola, in the territory of Realmonte, Italian town in the province of Agrigento in Sicily.
Description
The villa was discovered in the early twentieth century. Located on the beach of Punta Piccola, a few kilometers from the town of Realmonte and the Scala dei Turchi, the structure is composed around all'impluvium, located in the central courtyard adorned with columns. It is organized around the various rooms, some with waterproof floor with inlaid marble, others with polychrome mosaics depicting scenes and sea gods. The spa complex within the villa testifies to the wealthy economic status of its owners.

The villa in Roman times was essentially a country house. Developed in Italy in particular starting from the late Republican, it stood as a manor house in the center of a complex of buildings and land used for agricultural production or as a place to rest (otium) from activities and affairs (negotium) practiced in the city.

According to Pliny the Elder and Vitruvius there were two types of villas: the urban villa, which was a country house that could easily be reached from Rome (or another city) for a night or two, and the villa rustica, the residence with farm functions permanently occupied by the servants or slaves who worked for the bosses.

The villa of Tellaro, near Noto, is a rich suburban residence of the late Roman imperial age

History and description

The remains, found since 1971, are located in a fertile agricultural area, on a low elevation near the Tellaro river, under a seven-nineteenth-century masseria. The central body of the villa, smaller than that of Patti, is built around a vast peristyle. The part of the portico on the northern side had a mosaic floor with laurel festoons that formed circles and octagons with the sides bent including geometric and floral motifs and on it there are two other rooms that preserve the figured mosaics.

In the first of these environments the mosaic, very damaged, retains a panel with the scene of the redemption of the body of Hector: Ulysses, Achilles and Diomedes, identified by inscriptions in Greek, are engaged in weighing the corpse of the hero. The figure of Priam is lost; Hector's body, fragmentary, was on a scale; The gold of the ransom was in the other plate. This episode, not mentioned in Homer's Iliad, probably derives from a tragedy of Aeschylus.
The mosaic floor of the second room presents a hunting scene, with a banquet in the open air between the trees and a female figure interpreted as the personification of Africa.

The scenes of the second environment recall the hunting mosaics of the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, but with more stylized and two-dimensional figures, with uncertain proportions, which make the effect greatly different.
Probably the mosaics are the work of African craftsmen. Based on numismatic evidence, the mosaics were made after the middle of the 4th century AD.

The villa of Tellaro today has been the object of a renewed interest in recent years, thanks above all to a series of renovation and redevelopment projects in the area concerned.
On 15 March 2008, over thirty years after the excavations, the villa of Tellaro was finally inaugurated and made accessible to the public.
Behind the Villa the splendid and sometimes ancient vineyards begin, where even today the traditional local grapes are grown: nero d'Avola, moscato and albanella (or albanello) increasingly difficult to find.

The Val di Noto is the territory of eastern Sicily that geographically corresponds to the southern tip of the island, identified between the province of Ragusa, Syracuse and part of the provinces of Catania and Caltanissetta.
Among all the towns of the Val di Noto, the municipalities of Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli in 2002 entered the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to the Sicilian baroque.
In addition, the historical centers of the municipalities of Acireale in the province of Catania, Ispica in the province of Ragusa and Mazzarino in the province of Caltanissetta are being added.

Note that "Val" in this case is not for "Valle" but for Vallo, the name of the geographical units in which Sicily was divided into the Arab-Norman period: together with Val di Noto there were the Val di Mazara and the Val Demone.

The particularity of this common "identity" for the cities, derives above all from the admirable reconstruction that took place after the earthquake of the Val di Noto in 1693. There are in fact some wonderful examples of late Baroque art and architecture of which they constitute a moment of synthesis, presenting notable characteristics of urban and architectural homogeneity.

Given these characteristics, the circuit of the cities of the Val di Noto has been registered in the Unesco register. This important result is determining a positive economic fallout in the entire area, in the face of an increase in tourist presences in the area and the birth of multiple accommodation facilities.

However, to threaten the integrity of the landscape there is the attempt, by a Texan oil company, to start a series of projects for the extraction of oil from the subsoil. This request that does not fit with its tourist aspirations was initially supported by the Sicilian Region and subsequently blocked by the then Regional Councilor Fabio Granata in 2003. To date the company, still determined to carry on its project, has initially resorted to the TAR of Sicily, subsequently announced the "stop" to drilling; however, this decision is still contested by environmentalists because the detention concerns a part of the territory concerned.

With only 80 euro sleep to may, june and july in four in the price included: linen, final cleaning and breakfast.

Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina is the supreme example of a luxury Roman villa, which graphically illustrates the predominant social and economic structure of its age. The mosaics that decorate it are exceptional for their artistic quality and originality, as well as their extension.

The grandeur and lavishness of the structure built on the ruins of the house suggests that it was built on order, if not of a Roman ruler, if not a rich and powerful landowner, between 310 and 340. It was inhabited until the invasion Arab of the 9th century, although in a state of increasing degradation. The final act of destruction is operated by the Norman king of Sicily, William the Bad, around 1155.

The villa is built on a series of terraces. The first is the monumental entrance, which opens into a courtyard, which overlooks the elaborate complex of baths. Oval gym provides access to an impressive octagonal frigidarium (cold room) and then through the tepidarium (warm room), from which there are three calidaria (hot baths). It follows the impressive main peristyle with its monumental fountain in the center, and the rooms that open out of it. There is a small sanctuary apse on one side. To the south is the third group, around the peristyle elliptical. The large triclinium has apses on three sides and is decorated with mythological scenes, particularly the Labours of Hercules. The fourth group is located east of the main peristyle, connected by a long corridor with the scene of the Great Hunt. This monumental area contains one of the most beautiful mosaic floors and most deservedly famous, depicting the capture of wild animals in Africa, with the master and his assistants who direct the activities of the center. This group also includes the basilica, a large function room, which is paved in marble mosaics instead. Most small private rooms in this part of the complex accommodate floor mosaics depicting more peaceful and domestic activities. Particularly well known is the group of young women wearing very similar costumes to modern bikinis, engaged in sports activities. The mosaics are the glory of the Villa del Casale. Date back to more advanced period of art of the mosaic and were probably the work of artists from North Africa, to judge both the quality of work and the scenes depicting. For stylistic reasons it is believed that at least two mosaic masters who worked on the house, one with a more classic style for the mythological scenes and the other using a more realistic approach to the scenes of contemporary life.

Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact under today's fields and orchards. Selected excavated areas throw light on the later Hellenistic and Roman town and the burial practices of its early Christian inhabitants.

The archaeological area of Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples, is on the southern coast of Sicily and covers the vast territory of the ancient polis, from the Rupe Atenea to the acropolis of the original ancient city, as well as to the sacred hill on which stand the main Doric temples and up to the extramural necropolis.
The archaeological area of Agrigento includes all the essential elements that contribute to the justification of its Outstanding Universal Value. The site boundary includes the entire territory of the ancient polis, including the extramural area of the necropolis, the substantial excavated areas of the residential area of Hellenistic and Roman Agrigento, the complex network of underground aqueducts and a wide portion of land where there are still unexcavated archaeological structures. The archaeological structures have been preserved in good condition, thus ensuring an authentic representation. However, land instability remains an issue.

The King Ruggero room, which is inside the Torre Pisana, the oldest wing of the building, is characterized as the Palatine Chapel, a XII century mosaic decoration.

The mosaics decorations but in this case represent the courtly character scenes and hunting with great dedication in the performance of animals including, besides the mythological centaurs, appear leopards, peacocks, deer, swans in the background of a green area with trees and palms. The performances by the sumptuous canons but with stiffness accents, outline the clear greek-Byzantine work matrix. Adelasia Tower and Santa Maria La Cava or Lo Plano

The Adelasia Tower, which today constitutes the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria La Cava, was originally built on the Cordova Square, but originally was one of the defense towers along the walls lining the western slopes of the Norman hamlet.
Of the original Norman plant, it maintains the lower floor from the high ogival portal and, inside, the cruise liner, the beautiful side portal of limestone and the majestic apse.

Over the centuries he has undergone many remodeling and overlapping in different styles: the Gothic-Catalan of the sixteenth-century piano and the upper floor of the eighteenth century.

The church of Santa Maria was founded by the name of Santa Maria Lo Plano by Adelasia, nephew of Count Ruggero, as it reads in a diploma of 1134. It was a priory of the Benedictines.
The medieval system preserves only the apse and the tower.
The current facade, incomplete, is the result of an ambitious late seventeenth-century project for a three-nave church. The symmetrical relationship of the portals was lost in the last radical restoration, completed in 1940: to extend the church's capacity for reception, the high interior step was eliminated, the central portal was elevated and the high semideclear square was added. It was definitively abandoned the design of a three-nave church and two chapels on the west side and the kindergartens on the eastern side.
To remind of the Norman origins, the interior of the apse was brought back to the naked stone, and therefore in sharp contrast to the decorative system dominated by the frescoes of the painter Clelia Argentati.
The Church is also a sanctuary dedicated to St. Philip the Apostle: the simulacrum of the saint, considered miraculous, guarded in a chapel richly decorated with stucco, is the subject of great veneration: the 1st of May agree to Aidone to celebrate it, thank it or impetriate thanks, Pilgrims from all the municipalities in the province.
