PALAZZO BISCARI IN CATANIA
Palazzo Biscari is the most important private palace in Catania.
The palace is accessed through a large portal on Via Museo Biscari, which leads into the central courtyard, adorned with a large pincer staircase.
Inside, there is the rococo style "party hall" with a complex decoration made up of mirrors, stuccos and frescoes painted by Matteo Desiderato and Sebastiano Lo Monaco.
The central dome was used as housing of the orchestra, and is covered by a fresco depicting the glory of the Paterṇ Castello di Biscari family.
The dome is accessed through a staircase decorated with stuccowork (which Prince Ignazio called "cloud-shaped") inside the large gallery overlooking the marina.
Other rooms include the "dei Feudi", with large canvases on the walls representing the numerous feuds of Biscari; the "princess apartments", built by Ignazio V for his wife, Anna Morso and Bonanno of the princes of PoggioReale, with inlays of inlaid wood and marble floors from the Roman era; the "gallery of the birds" and the "room of Don Quixote". Finally, the Museum is particularly important, where once was the great archaeological collection (now partly in the Civic Museum of the Ursino Castle) by Ignazio V, a great scholar, archaeologist and lover of the arts in general.
