SAN VITO LO CAPO
San Vito Lo Capo is one of the most famous summer resort of Sicily, for the beauty of its
beach which in 2011 was voted the best Italian beach and the eighth in Europe. On its
territory is the westernmost part of the Zingaro Nature Reserve.
San Vito Lo Capo is formed from the Sanctuary, an 'ancient fortress that over the centuries has been renovated with new styles. The first building, built around three hundred, was a small chapel dedicated to San Vito martyr, patron saint of the village.
In the fifteenth century, the original building went turning into a fortress-housing to
accommodate numerossissimi faithful visiting the religious place and to defend them from attack by thieves and bandits.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century began to appear the first houses all around the shrine. At the end of that century, around the church already existed a small group of houses.
Since 1998, the town is home to the last week of September, the "Cous Cous Fest", an
international festival of culture and gastronomy of the Mediterranean.
In July and September is provided an overview of the books with authors.
Also in July is celebrated the Summer Music Festival.
In the spring ends in San Vito Lo Capo, the international festival of kites.
Internationally renowned kite flyers compete with background music that accompanies the stunts kites music.
In October is held on San Vito Climbing Festival, an international festival for climbers,
who can make climbing the mountains of the area.
