Caronda


Lived in the fifth century a.C. It was the oldest and most famous legislator. He gave wise and profound laws, not only to Sicily, but the Magna Grecia. Founded the first academy, he called the Onisipii, where they gathered eminent citizens for intellect and costumes. It was the first who consecrated in the laws of the State obligation to ensure the education of youth for free. He instituted in Catania the first school for the study of Greek literature. Its laws were enhanced also by the modern, such as Tommaseo, Gioberti and others. According to legend, he killed Caronda to have violated a law that he himself given, which sanctioned, the death penalty, that no citizen could participate armed in public meetings. His tomb in Catania existed until 1740.
