The history of the town square (Armerina was added in 1862) began in the Norman period, but its territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as shown by archaeological finds of Monte Navone and, above all, of Mountain of March.
The city had to be flourishing in Roman times, as witnessed by the splendid Villa Romana del Casale beginning of the fourth century, with its famous mosaic floors around the world. Over the centuries, the city has undergone ups and downs, but has often played roles of political prestige and economic and cultural life has always been particularly active, earning the nickname of "opulent city" by the Emperor Charles V. Piazza Armerina (721 m - pop. 22,000 approx.) Is an ideal city for those wishing to spend a nice relaxing holiday and culture. It is, in fact, a happy marriage between the work of nature and the intervention of man. Approximately 20,000 acres of lush green forests will mitigate the climate during the hot summer days and make an ideal holiday resort, but it is also an interesting art city, with its many monuments that are an invaluable cultural heritage and deserve to be rediscovered.
