The demographic evolution of Piazza Armerina, the unification of Italy to date has followed trends very erratic.
In 1861, in fact, was a census population of 21,716 souls, even slightly higher than today, since then, so the square was the center of today's biggest province of Enna. There followed a recession, however, the effects of which remained visible until the beginning of the twentieth century, when it reached the 24,000 square ab. and, among other things in line with the demographics are clearly positive in other cities of the province, he went to exceed 30,000 share marking a historic peak of 38,000 inhabitants. In 1921, the year that exceeded Enna and Caltagirone of 5,000 to 2,000 souls. The decrease that occurred in the next decade was impressive, to that in 1931 the city stood at 25,000 units, designed to share bordered 21,000 in 1981, a period of real crisis, triggered by the closure of the last active mines.
Today, the trend is slightly negative, but to a lesser extent than other domestic centers of Sicily. There are, however, real opportunities for growth, mainly linked to the restoration of the Villa del Casale and tourism.
